trap neuter return in nova scotia

Trap Neuter Return is not a new concept .... but for many people in Nova Scotia its a new and unfamiliar phrase.
What is it?   Humane animal traps are used to trap feral cats.  They are then taken to an animal clinic where they are vaccinated and altered.   After a brief recovery period, the cats are returned to their original location.
Who does this?  Committed volunteers perform this valuable and life saving community service.
Why is it such a good thing?   The cats are vaccinated, so they are healthier.  They are altered, so they do not reproduce.  This also reduces the public nuisance behaviors such as fighting, wandering and spraying.  The cats are normally returned to an existing colony and are fed and cared for by a volunteer colony caregiver.

THE FERAL CAT ENIGMA
Strategies for saving feral cats (and their offspring, who can make up the bulk of the kitten population in our shelters) cannot rely solely on aggressive adoption programs or strategies appropriate for healthy and
treatable pets. The answer for feral cats lies in community based programs that allow them to live out their lives side by-side with the rest us, while we devise other programs to humanely control their numbers  Nathan J. Winograd,

The compassionate and hardworking TNR volunteers are living proof that "One of the deep secrets of life is that all that is really worth doing is what we do for others. "  - Lewis Carroll
